Report: Mercedes-Benz S-Class Convertible Arriving This Year

We've heard rumors about Mercedes launching a drop-top S-Class for a long time, but now the automaker is confirming a 2015 launch for this model.

Speaking to Autocar, S-Class project manager Martin Hulder revealed, "I can confirm that there will be a car for star gazers later in the year."

And we're not surprised, considering we saw a prototype S-Class convertible out testing in nearly production-ready form last year. Just like the classic version from the 1960s, the new S-Class Convertible will feature a soft-top roof. Early shots also revealed a dramatically-raked windscreen and a large rear quarter window that may indicate a spacious rear cabin. We expect this 2+2 luxury convertible to receive power from the same group of V-8 and V-12 offerings that are available in the standard sedan and coupe. These include a 4.7-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 455 hp; a 5.5-liter twin-turbo V-8 with 577 hp; and a twin-turbo 6.0-liter V-12 with 621 hp.

When it debuts later this year, the Mercedes-Benz S-Class convertible should face limited competition. But we expect the Aston Martin DB9 Volante, Maserati Gran Turismo convertible, and Bentley Continental convertible -- all of which feature soft-top roofs -- will pose the biggest threats to the S-Class.
