Spied: Hyundai-Kia Dedicated Hybrid Prepares to Take on Prius

Rumors have swirled for years now that a dedicated hybrid model to take on the Toyota Prius has been in the works at Hyundai-Kia, and these spy shots seem to confirm those plans. Spotted on the top deck of a car hauler en route to the Arctic Circle for testing, this prototype sports a familiar profile along with a few clues that verify its electrified drivetrain.

The prototype wears heavy camouflage, but we catch a fleeting glimpse of the grille, headlights, and DRLs through the camo. If not for those unique details, this mule could easily pass for a Prius with its similar roofline. Because the mule was placed high on the trailer, our spy shooter was able to get a look underneath. If you zoom in on the rear control arms, you'll notice a sticker that reads "AE HEV." The HEV undoubtedly stands for hybrid electric vehicle, while AE is likely the internal name for the car.

Hyundai CEO Kim Choong-ho confirmed last year that a "hybrid-only" car was in development, though it's still unclear whether it will be branded as a Hyundai or a Kia. Whatever it arrives as, our intel suggests the standard hybrid Prius-fighter won't be alone. Just like the Prius, the Hyundai-Kia will be just one model in a range of hybrid offerings, which could include other body styles and a plug-in variant within a year after the initial launch.
