The EarthRoamer XV-LT: The Off-Road RV King

Four Wheeler logoFour Wheeler 2/21/2018 Mike Grasso

From inside the 2017 EarthRoamer XV-LT there’s not much indicating the extreme off-road capability of the vehicle; rather than giving off a rugged off-road camper vibe this half-million-dollar rig feels more like an expensive motor yacht. Finely crafted real wood cabinets made-in house are illuminated by hidden LED light strips, and a fogged glass cabinet window hides a backlit wine rack with custom-branded EarthRoamer glasses.

High-quality leather cushions designed and sewn also in-house, create a truly executive experience in this fully outfitted overland camper. EarthRoamers are beautifully finished inside and out, with every detail attended to. That being said, there’s nothing stopping these beasts from getting where they need to go: in the RV world they define the word capable.

Built off a commercial-grade Ford F-550 platform, there is certainly no lack of power, stability, or strength in the XV-LT. It comes equipped with Ford’s 6.7L Power Stroke turbodiesel engine, making 330 hp and 750 lb-ft of torque at 2000 rpm, and backed with a Ford factory warranty. The EarthRoamer could tow a significantly sized boat, toy hauler, or additional camping trailer fully loaded without issue, if you're looking to have even more fun. Thanks to its solar panels, 100-gallon fuel tank, and 377 amps of power from multiple alternators, the XV-LT will get you off the grid for quite some time without needing to refuel or recharge. You'll never be completely off the grid though, with satellite internet and TV.

The off-road capability of this super Super-Duty is impressive from the ground up: he XV-LT features 41-inch Continental MPT 81 military grade tires on 20-inch Hutchinson Beadlock aluminum wheels. At all four corners of the rig there are air-line outlets leading to the Oasis XD3000 heavy-duty air compressor and 5-gallon tank, so you can fill your tires quickly or even run air tools for on-trail repairs and maintenance.

The suspension is based on the original heavy duty F-550 setup, but with King shocks and adjustable Kelderman airbags front and rear it’s designed to easily clear the 41-inch tires and more if necessary. You can use the air bags to level out when camping, they're individually adjustable. The rig also has AMP power retractable steps to assist passengers without sacrificing clearance.

For those really tricky trails the EarthRoamer is outfitted with Warn 16.5ti 16,500lb winches front and rear. We took the new XV-LT into the Colorado Rockies this week to see how it felt in the snow, so stay tuned for a complete review down the road.
