In the early 2000s, TVR went endurance racing. In order to take its T400R—also known as the Typhon—to places like Spa, Sebring, Silverstone, and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, the small British company needed to sell road-going versions to complete the FIA's homologation requirements. It ended up building a total of four cars; three Typhon road cars and a single T440R. That T440R has just popped up for sale in the United Kingdom.

Aside from being a one-of-one car, what makes the T440R special is its engine. The 4.2-liter naturally aspirated straight-six borrowed much of its running gear from the race car, including a gas-flowed cylinder head, steel crankshaft and connecting rods, a carbon airbox, sequential fuel injection, and bespoke exhaust headers. According to the ad on Pistonheads, the motor was detuned to 440 hp to make it durable enough for use on the road.

Of course, the rest of the car is pretty special too. The chassis is made from bonded aluminum and carbon fiber, with carbon bodywork throughout. The goal was to make it as light and agile as possible. TVR claimed a zero to 60 time under four seconds and a top speed of 200 mph—in 2003!

The car is currently listed for sale on Pistonheads via The Autolounge, a dealership located in Scotland, with an asking price of £192,990 (roughly $270,000 at current exchange rates). While it won't be legal to import into the U.S. for another seven years, we suspect any American that buys this car will also have a place in Europe to stash it in the meantime.
