The upcoming Tesla Model X won’t be the only all-electric SUV if Land Rover has anything to say about it. According to Autocar, the Brits are planning their own electric version of the Range Rover to capture some of the EV momentum that’s been building lately.

Research

This report says that the electric Range Rover would be part of a new model lineup to supplant the existing Range Rover, Range Rover Sport, and Range Rover Evoque lines. The new model, which may include gasoline and diesel versions in addition to the EV, would be a more low-slung crossover like the Evoque, but with a larger overall size. Land Rover is reportedly considering using the existing Range Rover’s aluminum chassis, but modified significantly to accommodate a battery pack. 2013 land rover range rover© Provided by MotorTrend 2013 land rover range rover

A lower, sleeker design for this new Range Rover model would be important for achieving the low coefficient of drag necessary for boosting an EV’s electric driving range. Also contributing to this model’s efficiency could be an adjustable air suspension, possibly shared with the upcoming Jaguar C-X17 crossover, that could lower the car at highway speeds.

We don’t know yet what Land Rover is hoping to use for battery packs and electric motors, but this new model would need to come close to the Tesla Model S’ range of 265 miles for it to be competitive in this premium EV market. Luxury will be just as important in this Range Rover EV as it is in the brand’s other SUVs, so a price point hovering well above $100,000 would not be out of the question.

Land Rover has reportedly not yet come to a final decision on this model, so stay tuned over the next few months to see whether the all-electric Range Rover gets the green light for production. If so, don’t expect to see it for a few more years, as, being Jaguar Land Rover’s first EV, development could take a while.
