Kia Shows Off Dual-Clutch Gearbox, Mild Hybrid System at Geneva

Kia is headed to the 2014 Geneva Motor Show to show off a few things that it first unveiled here in the States, including the GT4 Stinger concept and the updated 2014 Optima Hybrid, which debuted at the Detroit and Chicago auto shows, respectively. There will, however, be a few world debuts, including Kia’s new seven-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission and a new mild hybrid powertrain that should make it into vehicles in a few years.


Kia’s Seven-Speed Dual Clutch Transmission

The new seven-speed dual-clutch gearbox could make its way into production vehicles as soon as next year. No word if the gearbox is headed to the U.S., though Kia already offers a six-speed dual-clutch automatic in other countries like the U.K., where the gearbox is offered in models like the Cee’d ( related to the U.S.-market Forte). The new seven-speed gearbox was developed for efficiency in mind, which means it will employ two dry clutches fitted with electric motor-driven actuators. Kia claims it will be 7 percent more efficient than the six-speed, while improving acceleration times by 5 percent.

Mild Hybrid System

Kia is also showing off a new mild hybrid system that combines a battery, electric motor, and a small electric supercharger. Much like a conventional supercharger, the electric supercharger will provide most of its boost at lower engine speeds, which Kia says will increase power by about 15 to 20 percent. The automaker says the electric supercharger could eventually be combined with a turbocharger that would kick in at higher engine speeds. Meanwhile, the hybrid’s electric motor will allow for a pure electric mode at low speed and cruising situations. The motor and supercharger are powered by a 48-volt lead-carbon battery, which Kia says doesn’t need the extensive cooling required for lithium-ion packs. The automaker also claims the lead-carbon battery should be easier to recycle, and should perform better in cold weather.

Electric Bicycle

The automaker is also dabbling in two-wheeled modes of transportation, and will show off two new electric bicycle prototypes that should provide a range of about 25 pedal-free miles. Power comes from a 36-volt lithium-ion polymer battery pack that feeds a 250-Watt motor churning out 33 lb-ft of torque to the rear wheel. The frame is constructed using the same metal stamping process Kia employs for its cars. One prototype is dubbed “City” and is targeted at commuters and features a rear-mounted battery, 28-inch wheels, and mud-flaps. The “MTB” model is built for the outdoors, featuring a mid-mounted battery, front shocks, and all-terrain tires.
