As promised, Mercedes-AMG is bringing out a racing-only GT model in the form of the new GT3, which is set to debut at the 2015 Geneva motor show next month.

Featuring a widened body, large air intakes, and lightweight rear aerofoil, the GT3 has been modified to increase performance and enhance aerodynamics over the standard GT. The model receives an AMG 6.2-liter V-8 engine taken from its predecessor, the SLS AMG GT3. This engine should improve horsepower over the GT's 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8, which comes with 456 hp or 503 hp in the S version. Mated to the GT3's engine is a six-speed sequential racing gearbox mounted on the rear axle.

Along with a beefier engine, the Mercedes-AMG GT3 offers lightweight materials like an aluminum spaceframe and integral roll-over cage made of high-tensile steel. Key components like the engine cover, doors, front wing, side walls, side skirts, diffuser, rear aerofoil, and boot lid are all comprised of carbon fiber.

Mercedes developed the race car just ahead of new FIA GT3 regulations. Following a series of tests, the first AMG GT3 will arrive to customer teams by the end of this year. In the meantime, we're keeping our eyes peeled for information on a possible street version of the GT3.
