2018 Honda Odyssey REVIEW

The 2018 Honda Odyssey is fully redesigned this year, and it features some styling tweaks that make it more like a tall wagon than a round bus. The Odyssey is revamped underneath as well, placed atop a new chassis with a new rear suspension that has been repackaged to be less intrusive and open up what Honda says is class-leading cargo space. The 3.5-liter V6 engine is familiar from past models, but it now offers more power (280 horsepower). It will pair with either a nine-speed or an optional 10-speed (yes, 10 speeds) automatic transmission. Honda has made the new Odyssey's seating even more flexible with its new Magic Slide seats. As before, a second-row middle seat can slide forward toward the driver or front passenger, making it easier to attend to little ones strapped into a car seat. With the middle seat removed, the other two seats can slide from side to side and lock into one of five selectable positions, making it a cinch to move around the van. The 2018 Odyssey's interior gets a big shot of new comfort and convenience tech as well. The new Cabin Watch system uses a camera to beam a view of your passengers — even at night, using infrared vision — on the large central display. Drivers can also use Cabin Talk to communicate with second- and third-row passengers through the stereo speakers or the rear entertainment system's headphones. Other standard or optional interior features include heated and ventilated front seats, stain-resistant leather, three-zone climate control, wireless device charging, a hands-free power liftgate and the HondaVac vacuum in the rear cargo area. Honda says the new Odyssey is also quieter inside thanks to thicker door seals; additional sound-damping material in the floor, fenders and engine compartment; and thicker acoustic front and side glass. Today's families on the go expect plenty of connected tech, and the 2018 Honda Odyssey is loaded with it. There's in-car Wi-Fi (through a 4G LTE cellular connection), Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and an optional rear entertainment system with a 10.2-inch drop-down display mounted on the ceiling. Satellite radio, HD radio, Pandora and Spotify are all available, and the new Social Playlist feature allows up to eight users to be the in-car DJ by uploading music from their smartphones to the Odyssey's playback system. The rear entertainment system and rear climate control can even be controlled via a smartphone app. The new Odyssey also gets Honda's latest safety tech, including the Honda Sensing feature package, which has automatic emergency braking, lane keeping assist and road departure mitigation (the latter knows when you've left your lane and can apply emergency braking to lessen an impact with objects off the road). Other driver and safety aids include blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, front and rear parking sensors and adaptive cruise control. The 2018 Honda Odyssey goes on sale this spring.
