Toyota may have scrapped the RAV4 EV, but it hasn't given up on making fuel-efficient variants of the compact crossover. The 2016 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid will make its official debut at the New York auto show next week.

The automaker is keeping a tight lid on information for this model until the unveiling, but it has released a single teaser image to whet our appetites. The taillights look different than the current 2015 RAV4, which makes us wonder what other unique elements we will find on the hybrid variant. It is also possible that the new model previews the entire 2016 RAV4 lineup, but there is no proof either way on that front.

Toyota's decision to build the RAV4 Hybrid comes as no surprise, considering reports surfaced that the automaker was considering such a model as far back as 2012. It is a prime candidate for a hybrid variant since the RAV4's 2.5-liter four-cylinder is the same engine used in other Toyota hybrids, including the Camry. Toyota can also potentially use a powertrain from a car in the Prius family.

We will have to wait until next week for more details on the RAV4 Hybrid. The model debuts April 2 at a press conference before the New York auto show opens to the public.
