The Porsche Cayenne is already a best-seller on a global scale, but its extreme popularity in China may just help the Asian country surpass the U.S. as the German automaker's largest market as soon as this year.

While the U.S. has been Porsche's top-selling market for the better half of the year, China came up big in September, buying 737 more German cars than the U.S. Sales in China surged 54 percent to 4344 units, while the U.S. experienced a 17-percent increase with 3607 German cars sold. However, although China outsold the U.S. in September, it's still behind by about 3000 units in year-to-date sales, though the race is much tighter now with only 3 months left in 2014. Through the first nine months of this year, 35,366 Porsches have been sold in the U.S., while 32,592 have been sold in China. 2015 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Rear Three Quarter View In Motion 2© Provided by MotorTrend 2015 Porsche Cayenne Turbo Rear Three Quarter View In Motion 2

"The U.S. performed very well this year, after a great year in 2013, but China is growing fast, thanks to the Cayenne which is our best seller there," Porsche’s sales and marketing chief, Bernhard Maier, told Automotive News Europe at the 2014 Paris Motor Show.

On a global scale, 51,000 Cayenne SUVs were sold, and with the newly refreshed 2015 Cayenne on sale this month, we don't expect those numbers to shrink anytime soon. We recently got behind the wheel of the updated model, which provided more of just about everything, including style, power, and fuel economy. And with four variants including the Cayenne Diesel, Cayenne S, Cayenne Turbo, and the brand new S-E Hybrid, there's a Cayenne for virtually any buyer who doesn't mind forking over the extra cash.
