We had a feeling “Furious 7” would do extremely well at the box office, but we had no idea how quickly it would become a worldwide hit. The latest installment of "The Fast and Furious" franchise took just 17 days to surpass $1 billion worldwide, two days quicker than what it took “The Avengers “ and “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2” to reach the same numbers.

Even though the film has been out in theaters for about three weeks now, it shows no signs of slowing down. The movie topped the U.S. box office for a third weekend straight, pulling in $29.1 million, but it didn’t start off as successful as the other two movies. In its first week, “Furious 7” made nearly $192 million domestically, which doesn’t come close to the $270 million “The Avengers” made, or the $226 million the last Harry Potter film made in their opening weeks. While the film is wildly successful in the U.S., it has made the most money overseas, grossing $857 million compared to the $294 million it has made in the U.S. to date. This isn’t the only record the “Furious 7” movie holds. We previously reported that Universal filed a record-breaking insurance claim of around $50 million to offset the cost of finishing the seventh installment of the series after lead actor Paul Walker died in a crash in late 2013. Originally budgeted at $200 million, "Furious 7" may have cost Universal as much as $250 million after delaying production and having to use a great deal of special effects to keep Walker’s character, Brian O’Connor, in the movie. Universal has also had to enlist help from Walker’s two brothers and another actor to fill in for the late star.

The movie also served as a tribute to the late Walker, which could help explain why it became a global hit so quickly. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image
