Tesla released good news for Model S owners who travel long distances by launching a prototype battery-swap program, with a pilot program available to invited Model S owners. The battery-swap program will allow Tesla Model S owners to travel a longer distance in less time by using an automated station to remove their car's depleted battery pack and replace it with a fully-charged one.

The proposed battery-swap program allows the entire battery to be replaced in three minutes, with faster replacement times coming in the future. The replacement service would cost “slightly less” than the price of a full tank of gas. Tesla originally said the swap would take about one minute, but the recent addition of titanium and hardened aluminum ballistic plates covering the bottom of the battery will increase that time to three minutes, as those parts also must be removed.

Tesla is offering a pilot battery-swap service by appointment only for invited Model S owners at a specially built facility across the street from the Tesla Supercharging station in Harris Ranch, CA. If the demand and technology are on par with projections, the company says it could make battery swap stations a more widespread feature available to all Tesla Model S owners.

Without a battery swap, the Tesla Model S can be charged at a Tesla Supercharger station from near empty to full in roughly an hour, requiring the driver to make multiple hour-long stops if he or she is planning on going cross-country. If battery-swap stations were more prevalent, it could make long-distance trips in a Tesla Model S even easier.
