Virgin's Richard Branson Hints at Possible EV Venture to Rival Tesla

Richard Branson, founder of the Virgin brand, is excited about the company’s involvement in the all-electric Formula E championship. He's also excited about electric cars in general, so much so that he let slip a provocative statement regarding the company's potential electrified future.

Branson made the comments about the company’s newest endeavor to Bloomberg this past weekend at the Formula E race in Miami. While talking about the Virgin team’s performance and the technology behind the electric race cars, the billionaire mentioned the brand might even develop an electric vehicle for the mass market. "We have teams of people working on electric cars," Branson said. "So you never know -- you may find Virgin competing with the Tesla in the car business as we do in the space business. We will see what happens."

While most automakers have an EV in their lineup, Tesla always seems to be the benchmark, and for good reason. The Model S features attractive styling, a massive 17-inch touchscreen, plenty of passenger space, and over a 250-mile range with a single charge. Not to mention it won our 2013 Motor Trend Car of the Year award with its impressive performance, which allowed it to become one of the quickest cars MT has tested. © Provided by MotorTrend

While it’s unclear what Branson has in mind, Virgin isn't the only company said to be considering the electric car business. Apple is also rumored to be dabbling in electric vehicles, though hard evidence of an Apple car has yet to surface.
