10 Quick, Attractive Cars Under $40,000 to Outrun Valentine's Day

Motor Trend logo Motor Trend 2/10/2015 Zach Gale

Valentine's Day is a great day to show those you love how much you care (aside from, you know, the other 364 days of the year), but some see it a different way. If you'd rather not participate in Valentine's Day festivities or simply think of it as Singles Awareness Day, we've assembled 10 vehicles you can use to outrun all those hearts and arrows — potentially with your significant other — and look damn good, too.

We've used Motor Trend test numbers as a starting point. Be sure to let us know what you think. What would you choose as an attractive and quick getaway car?

2015 Audi A3 2.0T

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image The 2015 Audi A3 is a clean, upscale take on the original A4 design that turned around the company's fortunes in the late 1990s. Although the A3 is available with a turbocharged, 1.8-liter I-4 and a turbodiesel I-4, it's the turbocharged, 2.0-liter I-4 with 220 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque that makes this list. With standard all-wheel drive, the A3 2.0T has been tested twice by Motor Trend, with our most recent tester hitting 60 mph in just 5.6 seconds. Not bad for a swift entry-level luxury sport sedan starting at $34,095 including destination.

Base Price: $34,095

2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image The 2015 Chevrolet Camaro SS 1LE coupe packs a whole lotta hotness into one 190.6-inch muscle car. When the regular SS Coupe's 426 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque don't get you going, how about the 1LE model's Tremec six-speed manual transmission, dark ZL1-style 20-inch wheels, and retuned front and rear stabilizer bars? Pair the Camaro's natural curb appeal with the 1LE's aesthetic and functional upgrades, and you've got one awesome getaway car.

Base Price: $38,000

2015 Chrysler 200S AWD

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image Chrysler has turned the 200 sedan into quite a looker for a midsize sedan. And if you want to maximize that curvy, new sheetmetal, you'll go for the S trim, which turns the car into a sporty sedan (but not a sports sedan). Even with all-wheel drive, the 200's 295-hp V-6 scoots to 60 mph in a respectable 6.3 seconds.

Motor Trend Tested 0-60 mph: 6.3 seconds

Base Price: $30,020

2015 Dodge Challenger R/T Scat Pack

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image The best value of the refreshed and still retro-fantastic Challenger lineup is the R/T Scat Pack, which mates a 485-hp, 6.4-liter V-8 from the SRT model with a six-speed manual or eight-speed automatic. The base model squeaks in under $40,000 with a car that's as much of a joy to listen to as it is to look at.

Motor Trend Tested 0-60 mph with automatic: 4.2 seconds

Base Price: $39,890

2015 Ford Fiesta ST

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image The 2015 Ford Fiesta ST is one of those rare cars that mix an affordable base price with taut styling and enjoyable driving dynamics. On the track, we've tested the subcompact Fiesta ST hitting 60 mph in as quick as 6.4 seconds.

Motor Trend Tested 0-60 mph: 6.4 seconds

Base Price: $21,770

2015 Honda Accord Coupe V-6

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image In coupe form, the Honda Accord sheds the sedan's more conservative styling and offers a tantalizing combination: the automaker's 278-hp, 3.5-liter V-6 with a solid six-speed manual. We've seen 0-60 mph in as quick as 5.4 seconds.

Base Price with manual transmission and V-6: $31,595

2015 Kia Cadenza

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image The full-size Kia Cadenza has no sporting pretentions, but it's one of the best sub-$50,000 sedans available today. Even without the larger 19-inch wheels that push the car's price above our $40,000 limit, the Cadenza is a good-looking, semi-premium front-drive sedan with a 0-60 mph time of 6.3 seconds.

Motor Trend Tested 0-60 mph: 6.3 seconds

Base Price: $35,725

2015 Mercedes-Benz CLA250

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image Even though the CLA250 uses a front-drive platform (with available all-wheel drive), it's hard to go wrong with mini-CLS styling. The CLA is a good-looking four-door, and the diamond-block grille accents of the sport package just add to the appeal. With 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque from its turbocharged, 2.0-liter I-4, the CLA250 is no CLA45 AMG, but it still manages a sprint to 60 mph in just 6.3 seconds.

2015 Ram 1500 Sport

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image The 2015 Ram 1500 Sport is a special package that amplifies the Ram 1500 truck's existing swagger with darkened headlight trim, flashy 20-inch, five-spoke polished wheels, and a refreshingly chrome-less exterior appearance. We tested a four-wheel-drive model weighing 5,624 pounds and with a 395-hp, 5.7-liter V-8 paired to an eight-speed automatic; it hit 60 mph in a respectable 6.8 seconds.

Motor Trend Tested 0-60 mph with 4WD: 6.8 seconds

Base Price: $36,650

2015 Volkswagen CC R-Line 2.0T

MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image Though the Volkswagen CC's name is short for the somewhat awkward "comfort coupe," there's nothing awkward about the coupe-like four-door's styling. We tested a 2014 CC R-Line 2.0T with a six-speed twin-clutch automatic stylishly accelerating from 0-60 mph in 6.7 seconds.

Motor Trend Tested 0-60 mph: 6.7 seconds

Base Price for R-Line 2.0T: $35,140
