The Chevrolet Equinox was refreshed for the 2013 model year with a more powerful available V-6 above the standard I-4, so the notable changes for 2014 are chrome wheels as standard equipment on the LTZ, and the addition of Red Rock Metallic and Silver Topaz Metallic as exterior color options for the entire line.

The Chevrolet Equinox is the automaker's entry into the competitive compact-to-midsize five-passenger crossover segment. The Equinox strikes a good balance among fuel economy, utility, and comfort, allowing it to compete well against the often smaller-feeling competition.

Summary

The five-passenger Chevrolet Equinox continues to be available with two engines. The base engine is the 2.4-liter I-4 that makes 182 hp and 172 lb-ft of torque, while getting at EPA estimated 20-22/29-32 mpg city/highway, with a slight penalty for AWD. Stepping up to an LT or LTZ gets you the option of a 3.6-liter V-6 (introduced for 2013) which pumps out 301 hp and 272 lb-ft of torque, and gets an EPA-estimated 16-17/23-24 mpg, with the same penalty for AWD. All variants of the Equinox get a six-speed automatic and come standard in FWD, but have the option of AWD. Standard equipment for the Equinox is the MultiFlex sliding rear seat, which provides up to 39.9 inches of leg room for passengers, a class-leading figure.

The 2014 Chevrolet Equinox has a four star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is considered a Top Safety Pick+ by the IIHS.

What We Think

The up-sized V-6, introduced in 2013, is better than the engine it replaced in all the ways that matter, and is even on-par for the EPA-estimated fuel economy from the discontinued 3.0-liter V-6. We didn't mind the four-cylinder Equinox for solo-commuting and errand runs, but after a First Drive of a 2013 LTZ with the V-6 said, "we would definitely recommend spending the extra $1500 for the V-6 if you like your crossovers with more guts, or if shuttling passengers and gear is part of your daily routine." We point out another added benefit, noting "opting for the V-6 also means adding Dual Flow Dampers (DFD) for the front shocks. The DFDs improve ride quality and handling by varying the softness or stiffness of the shocks according to road conditions."
