Vehicle Overview

The Nissan Xterra is among the last of the U.S. market's off-road-focused body-on-frame SUVs. With its "everything you need, nothing you don't" philosophy, the Xterra has served off-road aficionados well since the nameplate's introduction in 2000. That combination of on-road usability and off-road capability make it a solid choice for the adventure seeker today.

The SUV shares its F Alpha bones with the midsize Nissan Frontier pickup, and comes exclusively with a 4.0-liter V-6 producing 261 hp and 281 lb-ft of torque. Three trim levels are offered, including X, S, and Pro-4X. Four-wheel drive is available on X and S models, and comes standard on the Pro-4X model. A six-speed manual transmission is available on S 4x4 and Pro-4X models, while all others get a five-speed automatic.

Standard interior features include reclining front bucket seats, dual front and rear cupholders, power windows and locks, remote keyless entry, and cruise control. The Pro-4X model adds special cloth upholstery with white contrast stitching, and is available with leather. Nissan's Easy Clean Surface is available for the cargo area, and true to its name is simple to clean after a long day in the wilderness. A total of 10 utility hooks rated at 110 pounds each can also be found in the cargo area. A built-in first-aid kit and dedicated space for 1-gallon jugs is available, as is an adjustable channel system in the cargo floor.

New for 2014

For 2014, the Xterra's available navigation system now gets NissanConnect Apps, which can integrate certain iPhone and Android apps like Pandora, iHeartRadio, and Facebook. The updated system also includes Sirius XM Traffic, Travel Link, and Weather capability, though a subscription is needed. Other changes include standard Bluetooth and steering wheel audio controls, the addition of heated front seats on the Pro-4X trim, new 16-inch alloy wheel designs for S and Pro-4X, and a new Hyper Silver paint for the grille and underguard.
