The numbers are in – the EPA has just released its fuel economy figures for the new 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel, confirming what we already know: that the new diesel-powered Ram is the most-efficient full-size pickup on the market. In the EPA's testing, the rear-drive Ram 1500 EcoDiesel was rated at 20/28/23 mpg city/highway/combined, making our 2014 Truck of the Year the most-efficient pickup on the market, bar-none.

The EPA's 20/28/23 mpg rating for the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 4x2 just about matches our Real MPG figures of 18/28/22 mpg for the rear-drive Ram diesel. Thanks to features like active grille shutters, an adjustable air suspension with an 'aero' mode, and a segment-exclusive eight-speed automatic transmission, the 3.0-liter turbodiesel V-6 making just 240 hp but a monstrous 420 lb-ft of torque is able to achieve killer numbers on both the EPA and Real MPG cycle.

The 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel's EPA ratings make it the most efficient rear-drive pickup truck on the market, as far as the EPA is concerned. The next-most-efficient pickup is the midsize Toyota Tacoma, which nets 21/25/23 mpg in base form with the 159-hp 2.7-liter I-4 and five-speed manual transmission.

In its segment, General Motors' Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra 4x2s equipped with the 285-hp 4.3-liter V-6 come closest to the Ram, with an 18/24/20 mpg EPA rating. Silverados and Sierras equipped with the volume 355-hp 5.3-liter V-8 net 16/23/19 mpg, as per the EPA. The closest the 2014 Ford F-150 can come to the Ram EcoDiesel's fuel mileage is with the base 3.7-liter V-6 making 302 hp. That engine is rated at 17/23/19 mpg. Ford's EcoBoost 365-hp twin-turbo V-6 – the last true game-changer in the segment – is EPA-rated at 16/22/18 mpg in rear-wheel drive.

Neither the EPA nor Ram have yet to release fuel economy figures for the 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel 4x4, but we expect the EPA numbers to align closely with our 19/26/21 mpg Real MPG figures.
