2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4x4 Update 1

As the sole pickup in the Motor Trend Garage, our 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4x4 has been kept busy since its recent arrival, racking up more than 6,000 miles. But those miles haven't been without issue: Our pickup has suffered air conditioning trouble, an erratic oil pressure light, and a dead battery.

Research

Those issues were experienced during the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel's inaugural photo shoot. Our photographer notified us that after using the air conditioner for a while, cold air quit coming out of the vents. Additionally, the low oil pressure light turned on while driving on steep inclines, and the battery completely discharged on one occasion.

As soon as our photographer handed back the keys, we took the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel to the local dealer for a checkup. Although the air conditioning issue couldn't be replicated, the dealer performed a software update to the control head for the climate control touchscreen. A manual check of the oil level and oil pressure tested within parameters. Chrysler advised the dealer to replace the oil pressure sensor, which had to be ordered. The battery tested good after taking a 95-minute charge.

2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4x4© Provided by MotorTrend 2014 Ram 1500 EcoDiesel Outdoorsman Crew Cab 4x4 While waiting for the oil pressure sensor to arrive, we used our Ram 1500 EcoDiesel to tow a small go-kart trailer and as a support vehicle during our week-long Car of the Year testing at the Hyundai proving grounds. Unfortunately, the air conditioning issue returned a few days prior to the Ram's stint in the Mojave Desert. After 20 to 90 minutes of continual use, air quit coming out of the dash vents and the fan behind the glove box got louder. Eventually, the cool feeling near the vents turned warm. Shutting down the engine for about 15 to 30 minutes allowed cold air to blow from the vents again.

After Car of the Year testing (stay tuned to MotorTrend.com for the story), our Ram 1500 EcoDiesel returned to the dealer to have the oil pressure sensor installed. We again mentioned the air conditioner problem. This time, Chrysler advised replacing the air conditioner's evaporative temperature sensor. Just a few days after picking up the Ram, the air conditioner issue returned.

Twice when it quit working, we observed small chunks of ice under the truck in the normal puddle of condensation that accumulates after using the air conditioner, suggesting the compressor and/or air conditioning lines are icing over. We will mention our findings during the Ram 1500 EcoDiesel's third trip to the dealer.
