Two significant updates for the 2014 Volkswagen Passat is a new 1.8-liter turbo-four base engine and the addition of a Sport model trim. That combination can be had with the 2014 Volkswagen Passat Sport model, which will carry an MSRP of $27,295 when equipped with the five-speed manual transmission. The six-speed automatic is a $1200 option.

The new direct-injected engine is rated at 170 hp and 184 lb-ft of torque. Horsepower matches the outgoing inline-five, but torque increases by seven lb-ft. The new engine is more economical, too, with an EPA rating of 24/35 mpg city/highway with the manual, and 24/34 mpg with the automatic. The outgoing 2.5-liter achieved 22/32 and 22/31 mpg city/highway with the manual and automatic transmission, respectively.

The 2014 Passat Sport sits in between the mid-level SE and the top-of-the-line SEL Premium trim models. It features 19-inch wheels, rear spoiler, foglights, sport seats, carbon fiber-like accents, aluminum sport pedals, unique floor mats, and stainless steel door sills. Three paint choices are available. Urano Gray paint is exclusive to the Sport model, while Candy White and Tungsten Silver feature a contrasting black roof and mirror caps. The Passat Sport also comes standard with items found in the SE model, including a rearview camera, heated front seats, leather-wrapped steering wheel, and touchscreen audio system. Look for the Passat Sport to reach showrooms in early 2014.
