Vehicle Summary

The 2015 ActiveHybrid 7 is the hybrid variant of the 7 Series full-size sedan and is powered by a turbocharged 3.0-liter hybrid I-6 with a total system output of 350 hp. With an eight-speed automatic transmission, fuel economy is respectable at 22/30 mpg city/highway but isn’t a big jump from the base 740i and 740Li, which are rated at 19/29 mpg, and is less than the 740Ld xDrive’s 23/31 mpg rating.

Overview

Like all models in the 2015 BMW 7 Series range the ActiveHybrid 7 is available with many tech features such as adaptive full LED lights, navigation, a head-up display, a 16-speaker Bang & Olufsen sound system, night vision with pedestrian detection, engine stop-start tech, and rear-seat entertainment with iDrive. There is also a long list of convenience options such as multi-contour seats with ventilation and massaging features, heated seats, and a heated steering wheel. BMW also gives buyers to customize their car’s interior via BMW Individual, which includes new interiors upholsteries such as Platinum and Champagne Merino leather and white ash wood trim.

What We Think

While we haven’t tested the revised ActiveHybrid 7 with the new turbocharged hybrid I-6, in our 2011 First Drive review of the old car equipped with the hybrid V-8, we said that the car is like “a normal 7 Series” with plenty of gadgets and a “highly agreeable interior.” However, the car’s hybrid powertrain doesn’t maximize fuel economy because it’s focused on improving performance.
