2015 BMW X5 M, X6 M Debut With Improved Performance

BMW waited to introduce its high-performance SUVs at the very end of its pre-L.A. auto show media conference today, but what better way to solidify a crowd's attention than by blaring that exhaust note?

Rolling out on the auto show floor this afternoon were BMW's new M-powered SUVs, which produce sounds that can rival any top sports car. Indeed, that sound only complements a number of performance modifications on these SUVs for the 2015 model year.

As we reported previously, the BMW X5 M and X6 M debut with a 4.4-liter turbocharged direct injected V-8 that's been upgraded to produce 567 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. That engine comes paired with all-wheel drive and an eight-speed M Steptronic transmission to replaces the outgoing six-cogger. Zero to 60 mph arrives in 4 seconds, putting the SUVs on par with the M3 sedan. Meanwhile, fuel economy on the SUVs improves by 20 percent for the new model year.

Along with the M version, BMW also showed off its standard X6, built in South Carolina. BMW's new 2 Series Convertible made a showing alongside the SUV, flaunting a soft-top that opens and closes in under 20 seconds.
