The new Chevrolet Corvette Stingray has proven to be a million times better than its predecessor in almost every single way -- except for the fact that it debuted with the dated six-speed automatic. All that's about to change with the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, as the automaker has officially announced the sports car will get an available eight-speed automatic.

Based on the same 8L90 eight-speed from the 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06, the Stingray's setup will feature a unique clutch and torque converter specified to match the torque capacity of the Stingray's 455-hp 6.2-liter V-8. The result is a 5-percent improvement in fuel economy over the six-speed automatic's 18/28 mpg city/highway, though official EPA figures have not yet been revealed. The gearbox will also benefit from shift paddles and a new transmission-controller system that Chevrolet says rivals dual-clutch and semi-automatic transmissions found in many supercars. The automaker even puts Porsche on blast, saying "The controller reportedly executes commands 160 times per second, with wide-open throttle upshifts executed up to eight-hundredths of a second quicker than those of the dual-clutch transmission offered in the Porsche 911." Those are fighting words. 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 R 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06© Provided by MotorTrend 2014 Chevrolet Corvette C7 R 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Z06

We thought all hope was lost when we previously reported the 2015 Corvette Stingray would not be getting the eight-speed automatic. According to Corvette chief engineer Tadge Juechter, swapping the six-speed for the eight wouldn't be easy because of all the new drivers' aids, but thanks to creative packaging, the 8L90 fits in the same space as the sixer. Also because eight is better than six, the new transmission is more than 8 lbs lighter than the six-speed thanks to extensive use of aluminum and magnesium.

Chevrolet talks a big game with the available eight-speed, but we won't be able to put those claims to the test until we get our hands on one.
