The purchase of a sports car such as my long-term 2015 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray Z51 is often more of an emotional decision than a pragmatic one. The relative few who buy two-door sports cars every year buy them because of the sounds they make, the looks they generate, and the speeds they can attain instead of, say, fuel economy or practicality.

It’s the last point that often nips the purchase of a sports car in the bud. For some people, if a car can’t haul home a plant from Home Depot once a year or take a load of boxes to the post office, it’s not worth buying. But the thing is, a sports car like the MT Garage Corvette isn’t just practical for a sports car. It’s practical period.

With my wedding fast approaching and my bride in full DIY swing, MT ’s mailroom had been flooded with boxes full of decorations, candy, centerpieces, and more stuff than I’d ever know what to do with. With these packages coming to our office rather than my apartment, getting the boxes home presented a pretty interesting conundrum: Without asking to borrow a co-worker’s hatchback, SUV, or pickup, how was I to get the boxes home? With my old Audi A3 long-termer, I could maybe fit one large box on the back seat and a couple medium-size boxes in the trunk. With two large boxes of centerpieces and another medium box with god knows what inside, I was curious to see how the ’Vette stacked up.

Pretty well, as it turns out. The Stingray’s hatchback and large cargo area allow it to swallow more cargo than one would expect, making the task of schlepping boxes home easier even than it was in the A3. Outside of postal duties, the Corvette’s cargo area has had no trouble carrying day-to-day items such as groceries, luggage, or even my hockey bag. Quite impressive stuff for an “impractical” two-door sports car.
