New for 2015

The redesigned 2015 Ford F-150 adds a new EcoBoost 2.7-liter turbocharged V-6 with 325 hp and 375 lb-ft of torque to its engine lineup. New features include a 360-degree camera view, integrated loading ramps for ATVs, mowers, and motorcycles, LED headlights and taillights, and a new rearview camera with trailer hitch assist.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 F-150 is a full-size truck sold with four engine choices, five trim levels, three cab styles, three box lengths, and rear- or four-wheel drive.

In addition to the new twin-turbo 2.7-liter V-6, the 2015 F-150 is also available with a twin turbo 3.5-liter V-6 producing 365 hp and 420 lb-ft, a 5.0-liter V-8 making 385 hp and 387 lb-ft, and a naturally aspirated 3.5-liter V-6 with 283 hp and 255 lb-ft. Fuel economy ratings for the 2015 F-150 have not been released by the EPA as of this writing.

The redesigned 2015 F-150 offers good handling for a truck without impacting ride quality negatively due to its lighter weight. Off-road capability is another strong point due to the truck's rigid structure, allowing 2015 F-150s to traverse unpaved roads with ease. Ford has also added an off-road monitor that monitors the truck's body pitch, roll, and steering angles when driving through rough terrain.

Inside, the 2015 F-150 feels very upscale with high-quality materials and a host of new tech features, such as 360-degree view camera, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, and a version of Ford's Sync infotainment system with navigation and an 8-inch touchscreen. Cabin refinement is another high point, with strong attention to detail and cleverly designed chrome trim that won't "dazzle the driver's eye."

UPDATE: Blind spot warning is available in all but the base XL trim as a standalone option. The NHTSA gave the 2015 Ford F-150 a five-star overall safety rating (out of a possible five stars).

What We Think

The redesigned 2015 Ford F-150 is an impressive truck due to its lightweight aluminum construction, available turbocharged V-6 engines, and upscale interior. In a First Drive review, we said that the interior was "well-tailored for truckers" with big knobs and buttons easy to reach and simple to use. Driving dynamics remain impressive with good acceleration and a usable powerband with the two EcoBoost V-6 engines and handling that "feels more confident on curved onramps and interchanges than is expected from a half-ton pickup."

However, we noted during a First Test that the new features available on the 2015 F-150 "add a significant amount of weight" to the truck, cancelling out any weight savings made with the truck's aluminum construction.
