2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost Takes to the Track on Ignition

The 2015 Ford Mustang EcoBoost 2.3 has been getting lots of attention since its introduction, and the pony car is the main focus on the latest episode of Ignition. Here, host Carlos Lago finds out if the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost 2.3 is a suitable replacement for V-8-powered Mustang GT, a long-time favorite.

The episode starts off with a visit to Universal Technical Institute where Lago performs a close inspection of the Mustang's hardware. The smaller 2.3-liter turbocharged inline-four, he points out, leaves lots of space in the engine bay, including prime real estate for the twin-scroll turbo that boosts power to 310 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. Next, the Performance Package-equipped Mustang goes on the lift to reveal its robust exhaust system and upgraded wheel and brake set. The visit at UTI ends with a dyno session, which reveals the Mustang's interesting similarities to a couple of Ford hot hatches.

Next, Lago takes the boosted 'Stang to the track. Here, the 2015 Mustang EcoBoost 2.3 lays down a 0-60 mph time of 5.6 seconds its other performance numbers matches other sporty competitors like the Subaru WRX and Hyundai Genesis coupe. Overall, Lago says it's a significant improvement over the V-6 and he's impressed by the precise steering feel. Lago does point out one problem that hampers performance and handling. Finally, Randy Pobst gets behind the wheel and takes the new Mustang around Willow Springs, where the car's improved chassis impresses him. The video records the Mustang's best lap and shows how it compares against other cars, which you can see below. MotorTend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTend Image
