Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee is a five-passenger luxury sport utility vehicle (SUV) sold in five grades and in rear- or four-wheel drive. The SRT model offers exceptional performance and handling while the Summit trim is the most luxurious in the range.

The 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee offers four engines that are mated to an eight-speed automatic transmission.

EPA-rated Fuel Economy: 22/30 mpg (rear-wheel drive), 21/28 mpg (four-wheel drive)
Max Towing: 6,800 pounds

Engine: 5.7-liter V-8
Power: 360 hp/390 lb-ft of torque
EPA-rated Fuel Economy: 14/22 mpg (rear-wheel drive), 14/20 mpg (four-wheel drive)
Max Towing: 7,400 pounds

Engine: 6.4-liter V-8 (SRT model)

EPA-rated Fuel Economy: 13/19 mpg

All engines provide excellent power and capabilities particularly V-8 and diesel-powered Grand Cherokees, which offer generous torque for towing. The SRT model is an impressive performer with handling that belies its size and heavy weight thanks to its excellent four-wheel drive system. The eight-speed automatic mated to all engines are responsive and work well particularly with the diesel V-6, which is "the standout" engine in the range, and "makes the V-8 virtually obsolete in terms of torque." While V-8 engines provide good power, their fuel economy trade off isn't good, particularly with the 5.7-liter, which has less torque than the diesel V-6. The available air suspension improves handling and ride, making it stable on twisty roads and at high speeds.

Off-roading is also another 2015 Grand Cherokee strong suit with an excellent four-wheel-drive system that enables it to go through tough trails that are impossible to go through in a car-based crossover. While its ride is smooth, the Grand Cherokee is firmer compared to competitors like the Lexus RX, which are more refined due to their car based underpinnings.

Inside, the 2015 Grand Cherokee's interior is well-built, quiet and comfortable particularly in the Summit trim. Build quality is exceptional with high-grade materials and rich leather, giving the SUV an upscale feel. User-friendliness is also a strong point with an intuitive infotainment system complimenting the luxurious cabin. Chrysler's UConnect system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen and available navigation is one the most intuitive units on the market and is "easy to reach, easy to learn to use, and work as they're supposed to."

Depending on the drivetrain, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee has a four- or five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars).

What We Think

Among luxury SUVs, the 2015 Jeep Grand Cherokee remains one of the best all-around vehicles with exceptional off-road capability, great on-road manners, and performance that defies its size in the case of the Grand Cherokee SRT. While not as smooth as car-based crossover, its ability to go through tough terrains makes it a better all-weather vehicle particularly. In a 2013 Luxury Diesel SUV Comparison Test, the Jeep Grand Cherokee won because it expertly balanced capability, luxury, efficiency, and on-road performance. Interior quality is also top-notch with a well-insulated interior with real wood trim and many small touches such as accent lighting throughout the entire cabin.
