The 2015 Jeep Renegade appears to be following in the footsteps of its bigger Cherokee stablemate, as the subcompact crossover is also having teething issues with the nine-speed automatic transmission. As a result, several hundred Renegades are being withheld from delivery to dealerships across the country.

Research

Like the 2014 Cherokee, the Renegade is reportedly having issues with the software controlling its nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system. Even though the Renegade has a different all-wheel drive setup than the Cherokee, the problems are still very similar. MotorTrend Image© Provided by MotorTrend MotorTrend Image

“I’m having a very bad engineering day,” FiatChrysler CEO Sergio Marchionne said at an event earlier this week. “It’s a combination of attributes of that vehicle that is making my life horrible.”

Regardless of the issue, buyers have been flocking to the Renegade since it went on sale in the middle of March. In April, 4,214 Renegades were sold, outselling the Compass. As for other buyers who are anxiously waiting to get their hands on one, Marchionne said that the Renegades being held would be released by mid-June at the latest. This delay doesn’t seem to be nearly as bad compared to those of the Cherokee. Production on the crossover was delayed because of issues with the factory and the vehicle itself, specifically the nine-speed automatic transmission. Even after that, the automaker needed to iron out some kinks, forcing it to postpone a media launch event to further tweak the powertrain. Since then, the automaker has prepared more than a few updates to fix persistent problems with the transmission.

The Renegade can be had with either a 1.4-liter turbo MultiAir engine good for 160 hp and 170 lb-ft of torque or a 2.4-liter Tigershark engine good for 184 hp and 177 lb-ft. While the Tigershark engine comes paired with the nine-speed, the smaller mill comes standard with a six-speed manual transmission.
