First shown at the Geneva Motor Show last month, the new 2015 Jeep Renegade is estimated by Fiat- Chrysler to achieve more than 30 mpg highway. That estimate applies to both the turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir I-4 and the 2.4-liter Tigershark I-4.

Based on the front-drive-only Fiat 500L 's platform, the 2015 Jeep Renegade replaces the Jeep Patriot and Compass in the SUV maker’s lineup. Jeep Renegade Sport and Latitude models are powered by the 160-hp, 184-lb-ft turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir four-cylinder mated to a six-speed manual transmission in either front- or all-wheel drive. Other models are powered by a 184-hp, 177-lb-ft 2.4-liter Tigershark four-cylinder backed by the same nine-speed automatic as the larger Jeep Cherokee.

Two all-wheel drive systems are available: Jeep Active Drive and Jeep Active Drive Low. The first uses a power-transfer unit (PTU) to automatically switch between front- and all-wheel drive depending on road conditions. A wet clutch system distributes torque fore and aft. The 2015 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk features Jeep Active Drive Low with a 20:1 crawl ratio earning it Trail Rated bragging rights. Both systems feature Jeep’s Selec-Terrain traction control system, which allows drivers to choose between Auto, Snow, Sand, and Mud modes to better handle various terrains. Active Drive Low adds a Rock mode.

While official EPA ratings haven’t been announced, the 2015 Jeep Renegade’s Fiat 500L platform-mate with the turbocharged 1.4-liter MultiAir engine is EPA-rated 27-28/33 mpg city/highway. We expect front-drive Renegade models to be close to that and the all-wheel-drive models to be slightly lower.
