New for 2015

The 2015 Land Rover LR4 adds InControl Apps, smartphone integration, and standard side steps. A new two-tone interior color, Ebony/Cirrus Windsor leather with a wood and leather steering wheel and a new-design 20-inch wheel option has been added. It also has four new exterior colors available: Aruna, Kaikoura Stone, Montalcino Red, and Yulong.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Land Rover LR4 is a four-wheel-drive, three-row luxury SUV with seating for up to seven passengers. Land Rover has dropped the old V-8 engine during the SUV's 2014 refresh and replaced it with a supercharged 3.0-liter V-6 with 332 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy is not a strong point due to the SUV's body-on-frame construction; it's rated at 15/19 mpg city/highway. Towing capacity is decent for a luxury SUV at 7,716 pounds.

Overview

Off-road capability is good in the 2015 Land Rover LR4 thanks to two capable four-wheel-drive systems with a single- or two-speed transfer case. Land Rover's Terrain Response system optimizes the SUV based on the type of pavement it's on by adjusting the powertrain, traction control, anti-lock brakes, and center and rear differentials. The LR4's off-road prowess doesn't detract from its on-road performance with its comfortable ride and respectable handling thanks to the SUV's air suspension.

Interior quality is top-notch with plenty of soft-touch materials, high-grade leather, ambient lighting, and real wood accents used throughout the cabin. The 2015 LR4's cargo volume is generous, with up to 90.3 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. Seating in all three rows is good with plenty of room for adult passengers. Tech features include a navigation system, an upgraded audio system from Meridian, and a standard instrument panel with a 5-inch TFT center display.

The NHTSA and IIHS have not crash tested the 2015 Land Rover LR4.

What We Think

Among luxury SUVs, the Land Rover LR4 is one of the most capable off-road machines thanks to its body-on-frame construction and Terrain Response system, which enables drivers to maximize performance based on the surface they are driving on. In a comparison test against the Jeep Grand Cherokee, we said the LR4 excelled off-road with its high ground clearance and Terrain Response system allowing it to tackle all types of surfaces. However, off-roading controls are finicky to use and take some time to learn. It remains secure on-road with good handling and a comfortable ride despite its tall stance. Its cabin is also a strong point and is "draped in elegant leather and high-quality materials," and it has good levels of passenger comfort in all rows.
