And now for something completely different: another Range Rover.

This time, though, I've moved into the fast lane with a 2015 Range Rover Sport. My last Range Rover was an exercise in entry-level luxury, with the base 340-hp supercharged V-6, base 19-inch wheels and tires, and no panoramic roof. The only options were the 825-watt Meridian sound system, adaptive cruise control, a Vision Assist pack that included blind-spot monitoring, and a pre-wired tow hitch.

The Sport dips deep into the options cookie jar. The starting point is the $79,995 Supercharged model with the lusty 510-hp V-8 under the hood, the Terrain Response 2 all-wheel-drive system, an active locking rear differential, and a brake-based torque vectoring setup. The $2,750 Dynamic package delivers cosmetic changes such as gloss black exterior detailing, stainless steel pedal facings, and a TFT instrument display. More important, new fuel mapping and a reprogrammed speed limiter increase the top speed to 155 mph.

The $2,530 Front Climate Comfort and Visibility package adds 16-way heated and cooled front seats, a center console cooler, a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats, adaptive auto-dipping Xenon headlights, and blind-spot monitoring; the adaptive cruise control system rings the cash register to the tune of $1,295. As with my previous Range Rover this one also has the upgraded 825-watt Meridian sound system, though at $1,940 it cost 90 bucks more than last time.

The optional wheel/tire combination eschews the 21-inch setup that comes with the Dynamic package (20s are standard on the Sport SC) in favor of 22-inch wheels and 275/40 R22 Continental Cross Contact LX Sport tires. It's a setup that normally costs $3,000 extra, but is only $1,200 more if you've already ordered the Dynamic package. I know, I know … With my last Range Rover I argued against fitting big wheels and tires because of their deleterious effect on ride quality. But I figure if you're going to drive an SUV with a red Sport badge on the tailgate, it should be, well … sporty.

Most luxury cars in L.A. seem to be painted black or white or silver. The Range Rover Sport's ultra-pale gold Aruba metallic — one of five $1,800 premium paint finishes offered as options complementing the standard 12-color palette — glows like Cristal Champagne in the California sunshine. Inside are dark brown seats, carpets, and dash top — Espresso, according to the brochure — with warm beige, aka Almond, on the doors, the lower dash, and the center console. The interior also contains a minor mystery: According to the Range Rover configurator, that particular color combination is only available with the textured aluminum trim on the center console and armrests, and around the dash vents, when you order the Dynamic package. My car, however, has Zebrano wood veneer trim fitted for some reason. Looks good, though.

Total price: $93,856, including delivery. That's precisely $4,006 more than my previous Range Rover. That car, though, was the base model in a lineup that stretched all the way to the $185,000 LWB Autobiography Black. While it's possible to spend almost $110,000 on a fully loaded Sport Autobiography, 94 grand will buy you a version that delivers most of the decadence you desire with all the performance you want. At least that's what I'm hoping.

My last Range Rover was the best value luxury car in the world, a uniquely practical, versatile, and capable vehicle that still delivered all the street cred you need in Bentley-laden Beverly Hills. This one's different. This one's meant to be an all-weather, all-road gran turismo, something that's fast and fun and can take me pretty much anywhere I want to go, anytime I want to go there.
