New for 2015

The 2015 Lexus GX 460 gains Siri Eyes Free and an updated version of the Lexus Enform App Suite, which now features Slacker and iHeartRadio 4.0.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Lexus GX 460 is a three-row luxury SUV with seating for up to eight passengers, and standard full-time four-wheel drive. Its sole engine is a 4.6-liter V-8 with 301 hp and 329 lb-ft of torque paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Fuel economy isn't impressive at 15/20 mpg city/highway due to the GX's body-on-frame construction.

Overview

Off-road is where the 2015 Lexus GX excels, with many features such as downhill assistance control, crawl control, hill-start assist, and a hydraulic Kinetic Dynamic Suspension system that disconnects the anti-roll bars to allow a single wheel to move freely. Straight-line acceleration is good for a two-and-a-half-ton SUV, giving it plenty of power for highway passing and merging as well as for rock crawling and climbing steep grades. Towing capability is generous at 6,500 pounds. While it handles and rides well for an SUV, it lags behind car-based crossovers when it comes to on-road driving dynamics.

Interior quality is top-notch in the 2015 GX, with high-grade materials used throughout the whole cabin and plenty of sound deadening material that makes it more refined. Passenger space is good in the first and second rows while the third row is tight for adults. However, cargo space is smaller than most competitors at 64.7 cubic feet of volume with the second and third rows folded. Tech features are plenty and include a customizable touchscreen interface, pre-collision system, driver attention monitor, lane departure alert, dynamic radar cruise control, Lexus Enform App Suite, and a Mark Levinson audio system.

The NHTSA and IIHS have not crash tested the 2015 Lexus GX 460.

What We Think

As one of the last remaining body-on-frame SUVs on sale, the 2015 Lexus GX 460 is a good choice for those looking for a luxurious vehicle with excellent off-road capabilities and a refined cabin. In a comparison test against the Land Rover LR4 and Mercedes-Benz GL450, we said that the Lexus GX 460 is "a bona-fide desert warrior" because of its excellent capabilities off-road thanks to its array of assistance features such as a disconnecting anti-roll bar, and electronic aids such as crawl control and downhill assist control.

On the pavement, the SUV remains comfortable and takes turns well, as we noted on a 2010 First Drive review, but isn't as refined as car-based crossovers. Interior quality, on the other hand, is good with plenty of sound deadening materials used to make it quiet and improve refinement.
