New for 2015

The new 2015 Lexus RC 350 is available in rear- or all-wheel-drive configurations. It is based on a modified platform that combines parts from the previous generation IS convertible, current generation IS, and the midsize GS sport sedan.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Lexus RC 350 is a luxury sport coupe available in base, F Sport, and F models. The new two-door is powered by a 3.5-liter V-6 with 306 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque paired to an eight-speed automatic transmission in rear-drive variants or a six-speed unit in all-wheel drive variants. A high performance RC F is also available has under the hood a 5.0-liter V-8 with 467 hp and 389 lb-ft of torque mated to an eight-speed automatic. Fuel economy is decent for the class, at 19/28 mpg city/highway for rear-drive RC 350s and 19/26 mpg with all-wheel-drive while the RC F is rated at 16/25 mpg.

Performance is a 2015 Lexus RC 350 strong suit, making it one of the best handling cars in the Lexus lineup alongside the IS and GS sport sedans. Features such as rear-wheel steering assist, torque vectoring, and adaptive variable suspension all contribute to the car's excellent driving dynamics. Acceleration is strong in both models with the V-8 powered RC F being the fastest in a straight line; however, the car's weight hinders its acceleration, making it slower in a straight line than its competitors.

Polarizing exterior styling is the most controversial aspect of the Lexus RC line. Like the IS sedan, the RC 350 and RC F have instrument gauges inspired by the Lexus LFA supercar, making it feel sportier especially with the digital gauge cluster that changes based on the mode selected by the driver. Refinement is also a strong point, with a quiet cabin that keeps exterior noise minimal inside the car. Tech features are plenty, with everything from a G-meter, navigation with a new version of the remote touch pad, Mark Levinson premium audio, rear cross traffic alert, blind spot warning, Lexus Enform App Suite, and pre-collision system with dynamic radar cruise control.

Additional safety features available in the 2015 RC 350 include blind spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, and a Pre-Collision system, which detects imminent frontal collision and even apply the brakes to lessen the severity of the impact. The NHTSA has not crash tested the 2015 Lexus RC 350. In IIHS evaluations, the car received a good score in all testing categories and was given a Top Safety Pick+ award (good is the highest possible score).

What We Think

As a driver's car the 2015 Lexus RC 350 and RC F are excellent choices with impressive driving dynamics that don't come at the cost of ride comfort. While acceleration is hindered slightly by the cars' curb weights, it offers good straight-line performance especially the V-8-powered RC F. In a comparison test against the BMW M4, we said that the car is engaging to drive with great levels of stability, little understeer, and is "easier to drive fast due to it having less power oversteer."

However, the Lexus coupe is less at home on a race track, since its suspension is much softer than that of the M4. The interior, on the other hand, is a pleasant place to be with a modern design reminiscent of the LFA supercar and a quiet cabin that makes the car easy to live with. Its polarizing exterior design is its main weak point because of numerous strange details throughout the entire car. During the 2015 Motor Trend Car of the Year evaluations, the RC F was eliminated due to its exterior styling, which was described by judges as "one of the most bafflingly bizarre-looking cars we've ever laid our eyes on."
