2015 Mazda CX-5 Touring Long-Term Update 6

We're rounding the corner on our time with the CX-5 Touring, and although we have a couple months left with the compact crossover, we're pretty confident we have a good grasp on what we consider the model's strengths and weaknesses.

So far, it has acted as a perfectly reliable people-carrier, and we've experienced no real problems. Except on the very roughest of roads, it's pretty much always a joy to drive. But like in many long-term relationships, things that bothered us at first irritate us even more now. The navigation system is at times slow and unresponsive. Driving new competitors really pointed out how far behind the curve it is.

According to our records, we spend an average of $36.59 filling up the crossover each time we pull up to the gas station, and that seems cheap considering cost per gallon has averaged $3.50. We realized that the CX-5 has quite a small fuel tank: just 14.8 gallons. For those wondering, CX-5 models paired with all-wheel drive get a slightly larger tank at 15.3 gallons.

Lately, we've taken the time to notice a few things right under our nose -- specifically the gear shift area. Although the CX-5 doesn't have paddle shifters, we enjoy playing around with the manual shift modes that go up to six gears. It is fun and seamless shifting, and we love to hear the extra groan of an already sassy engine. We also noticed something about the parking brake lever one day. If you leave it fully or partially up and start driving, there's a very good chance you might not notice unless you happen to look up at the instrument cluster. Fortunately, we've only had a few close calls and never managed to go any far distance before realizing this issue.

Overall, our relationship with the CX-5 has blossomed into a rewarding and learning experience. Stay tuned for the next update and eventually our final verdict on the model.
