Vehicle Overview

The Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class is how automakers convince Americans to buy hatchbacks. Little more than a hatchback version of the CLA-Class with a suspension lift, the Mercedes GLA is new to the U.S. this year. Like the CLA, the GLA compact crossover comes standard with a 2.0-liter turbocharged I-4 making 208 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. Also like the CLA, there's an AMG version; the GLA45 AMG has a hand-built 2.0-liter turbo I-4 making 355 hp and 332 lb-ft of torque. A seven-speed dual-clutch transmission is the only one transmission. The base GLA250 comes standard with front-wheel drive, while all-wheel drive is an option. The GLA45 AMG only comes with all-wheel drive.

The fact that it's essentially a lifted hatchback doesn't make the GLA any less good. In fact, we've found it pretty entertaining to drive. We found the GLA250 4Matic to be a pretty fun car to drive on curvy roads, and it was also a comfortable cruiser. The GLA45 AMG was even better. "This runt of a powertrain might have the best exhaust note in the entire AMG lineup, including the mighty SLS AMG," we wrote, "With a lower ride height and beefier suspension bits, the GLA45 AMG was an absolute blast through the stretches of mountain switchbacks just outside of Malaga, Spain."

The 2015 Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class joins the CLA-Class here in the United States later this year. Though its base price may be relatively cheap (it's expected to start around $33,000 or so), a loaded GLA45 AMG could approach $60,000.

New for 2015

The entire Mercedes-Benz GLA-Class lineup is new to the U.S. this year. The GLA-Class could very well get an optional diesel engine in the future.
