The 2015 Nissan Murano debuted with a huge EPA-rated fuel economy improvement compared to its predecessor, but how will the midsize crossover perform in the real world? Not bad, it turns out. Motor Trend recently ran a 2015 Nissan Murano Platinum in front-drive form through our Real MPG program, an alternative source of standardized fuel economy numbers. The result?

The Murano got 19.7/28.5 R-MPG, compared to the EPA's 21/28 mpg result. That's 6 percent below the EPA estimate in city driving and actually 2 percent above it with highway driving. All 2015 Muranos are powered by a 260-hp 3.5-liter V-6 that's mated to a revised CVT. Until we get our hands on the 2015 Ford Edge, we can offer by comparison the Real MPG results of a 2015 Hyundai Santa Fe Sport with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine. In front-drive form, the Santa Fe Sport got 19.4/27.9 R-MPG, right in line with its 19/27 mpg EPA numbers and the 2015 Murano, but the Nissan is quicker than the Hyundai.

The 2015 Quest received updates that put EPA results at 20/27 mpg. An all-wheel-drive 2014 Pathfinder SL was good for 17.3/25.3 R-MPG (EPA: 20/26 mpg), while an all-wheel-drive 2015 Rogue SL landed at 22.6/28.9 R-MPG (EPA: 25/32 mpg).

The bottom line for Nissan crossover shoppers is that although Rogue I-4 drivers should see better fuel economy in the city and on the highway, the bigger gap over the new Murano V-6 might be in city driving.

If you were buying a midsize crossover such as the 2015 Nissan Murano, how important would fuel economy be to your buying decision?
