New for 2015

The redesigned 2015 Subaru Legacy is more efficient and now offers a continuously variable transmission (CVT) as standard on all models. The Legacy benefits from a new infotainment system and a host of new safety features including Rear Vehicle Detection with blind spot detection and lane departure warning, and a new generation of the EyeSight active safety system.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Subaru Legacy is a midsize family sedan sold in three grades and is the only one in its class that comes with all-wheel drive as standard equipment.

The 2015 Subaru Legacy offers two engines: a 2.5-liter F-4 with 175 hp and 174 lb-ft of torque and a 3.6-liter F-6 making 256 hp and 247 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to a CVT, which help improve its fuel economy to 26/36 mpg city/highway with the four-cylinder and 20/29 mpg with the six-cylinder. With the 2015 Legacy's focus on gas mileage, performance is not one of the car's strengths, with leisurely acceleration and unimpressive handling.

While exterior styling is anonymous, the 2015 Legacy has generous space inside for four adult passengers. The trunk is class competitive at 15 cubic feet and is expandable with the split folding rear seats. Build quality is a strong point with high-quality materials particularly the fake wood trims, which are “second to none” and the well-padded armrests. The infotainment system is a huge improvement over the outgoing model with user-friendly and intuitive controls, and a large, easy to read touchscreen. The 2015 Subaru Legacy has a five-star overall safety rating from the NHTSA (out of a possible five stars) and is a recipient of the IIHS’ Top Safety Pick+ award, earning a Good score in five categories (Good is the highest possible score) and offering Superior frontal crash prevention (front crash prevention awards include Basic, Advanced and Superior).

What We Think

The 2015 Subaru Legacy is a good choice as an all-weather family car with a spacious interior and user-friendly controls. Its conservative exterior styling makes it less distinctive compared to some of its competitors, but the interior is spacious for four passengers. In a First Test review, we noted that the infotainment system was a big improvement and wasn’t “automatically the worst in the segment/industry” with easy to use controls and a functional touchscreen. Performance, however, is behind most entries in the midsize family sedan class. During 2015 Car of the Year evaluations, the four-cylinder-equipped Legacy was one of the slowest to accelerate from 0-60 mph at 9.2 seconds due to its weight, lack of power, and the fuel economy-minded CVT.
