New for 2015

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser is unchanged.

Vehicle Summary

The 2015 Land Cruiser is a full-size luxury SUV with seating for eight passengers. It is sold as a single fully loaded model with a 5.7-liter V-8 making 381 hp and 401 lb-ft of torque mated to a six-speed automatic transmission and full-time four-wheel drive.

Overview

The Toyota Land Cruiser is well-known for its ruggedness and high levels of luxury befitting of its position as Toyota's flagship SUV. Its body-on-frame construction and full-time four-wheel drive system give it a good foundation as an off-roader, giving it a rigid body that can "be bashed pretty hard." However, it remains a smooth-driving vehicle on paved roads with a suspension setup that can adapt to the terrain. The 2015 Land Cruiser's capabilities off the beaten path come at the cost of fuel economy, with the EPA rating the SUV at 13/18 mpg city/highway.

Interior space in the 2015 Land Cruiser is generous for eight passengers and up to 81.7 cubic feet of cargo space with the second and third row folded down. Cabin quality is a 2015 Land Cruiser strong point with a "rich array of luxury and opulence, with very nice, soft leather swathing the cabin."

Exterior styling is a slightly disappointing since it doesn't adhere to the Land Cruiser's heritage with a less chunky look that makes it "reminiscent of the Highlander."

The 2015 Toyota Land Cruiser has not been crash tested by the NHTSA or the IIHS.

What We Think

The 2015 Land Cruiser maintains its reputation as a highly capable SUV off-road with a luxurious, well-appointed cabin and a good ride on any terrain. In a 2010 First Drive review, we said that the SUV's "rugged heritage and character didn't extend into the interior" with its upscale appointments. The car's disappointing fuel economy and a starting price of $81,225 (including destination) puts it in competition with higher end SUVs with more prestigious badges, detracting from the Land Cruiser's overall appeal despite its proven capabilities.
