The Insurance Institute of Highway Safety has added the 2015 Toyota Prius C to its list of Top Safety Pick winners. Only 2015 Prius C hybrids built after May 2015 qualify for the award.

IIHS retested the 2015 Toyota Prius C after the automaker made a number of midyear changes to the hatchback’s structure and safety equipment. For starters, Toyota strengthened the 2015 Prius C’s front end and passenger structure. The automaker also lengthened the side curtain airbags.

The improvements were enough to boost the Prius C’s small overlap front crash test result from “poor” to “acceptable,” making it eligible for Top Safety Pick status. The IIHS states that passenger space intrusion at the lower door-hinge pillar was 9 inches, compared to 12 inches before structural improvements were made. The IIHS also notes the side curtain airbags did a better job of protecting the driver’s head.

However, the institute suggests the front seatbelt could’ve done a better job of preventing the passenger from moving forward. Additionally, the front seat inadvertently moved forward and towards the B-pillar. Despite those unfavorable findings, the 2015 Prius C still earned a “good” rating on all other evaluations including side, roof strength, and moderate overlap front tests.

The 2015 Toyota Prius C now joins a short list of Top Safety Pick subcompacts including the Chevrolet Spark and Honda Fit.
