New for 2015

The 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf is a new addition to the Golf lineup.

Vehicle Summary

The EV variant of the Golf hatchback, the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf is powered by an electric motor with 115 hp and 199 lb-f of torque and is paired to a single-speed automatic transmission. It has an estimated range of up to 83 miles or 126/105 mpg-e city/highway and fast-charging capability that enables it to bring the battery back up to 80 percent in 30 minutes.

Compared to its competitors, the e-Golf has one of the best ranges and is only surpassed by the Fiat 500e and the Kia Soul EV, which can do 87 miles and 93 miles respectively on one charge. Other competitors such as the Nissan Leaf, Ford Focus Electric, and Mitsubishi i-Miev have less range than the e-Golf at 73 miles, 76 miles, and 62 miles respectively.

Overview

Thanks to the electric motor’s torque being available from zero rpm, the 2015 e-Golf has plenty of zip for city driving and is able to maintain highway speeds with ease; Eco mode dumbs down the car’s throttle responses to increase fuel economy. As with other Golfs, interior space remains generous with up to 52.7 cubic feet of cargo volume with the rear seats folded down. Volkswagen sells the car in two well-equipped models and comes standard with features such as hands-free keyless access, navigation, LED daytime running lights, rearview camera, and a fast-charging systemThe IIHS awarded the entire 2015 Golf lineup with the Top Safety Pick designation, scoring Good on all crash tests (Good is the highest possible score).

What We Think

For people with short commutes, the 2015 Volkswagen e-Golf is an excellent choice thanks to its practical hatchback body style and zippy performance, especially in city driving. In a First Test review, we said that the car can keep up with freeway traffic with ease thanks to its torquey electric motor; however, driving at high speeds does cause the e-Golf’s range to drop quickly.

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf family, which includes the e-Golf, is Motor Trend ’s 2015 Car of the Year.
