Thanks to structural changes made on the 2015 model, the Volkswagen Jetta has earned a Top Safety Pick + rating from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety.

Volkswagen strengthened the Jetta's A-pillars and door sills, which bumped up its score on the small overlap test. For 2015, the Jetta ranked "Good," up from last year's score of "Marginal." In the tests, the IIHS noted that the side airbag deployed and protected the dummy's head from the vehicle and the outside elements, although the head managed to slide off the airbag and move forward.

The 2015 Volkswagen Jetta also scored top marks in other areas, including moderate overlap front crashes, side crashes, roof strength tests, and head restraints and seats. The Jetta's optional forward collision warning system allowed the car to earn the "+" designation after the Top Safety Pick label.

To qualify for the IIHS' highest distinction, vehicles must offer some kind of front crash protection and must earn "Good" ratings in all tests except the small overlap test, which they must score at least "Acceptable."

The 2015 Volkswagen Golf and GTI models have also earned TSP+ ratings from the IIHS. Some of the Jetta's competitors have also scored the honor, including the 2014 Honda Civic and 2014 Mazda3.
