The 2016 Acura MDX has been given significant updates for the new model year, while the price has only increased by $100 to a starting price of $43,785 after the $920 destination charge.

Power will come from the same 3.5-liter direct-injected V-6 engine found in the 2015 Acura MDX , but the engine will now be paired with the new nine-speed automatic transmission that we first saw on the all-new 2015 TLX. Acura says this new gearbox, which also features Sequential SportShift, will increase acceleration performance, thanks to not only weight savings but closer gear ratios.

Acura has also updated its available Super Handling All-Wheel Drive system (SH-AWD). The system now features a lighter twin-clutch rear differential to help distribute torque between the front and rear wheels, as well as from right and left wheels. Front-wheel drive is still standard.

Depending on the trim, a bi-directional remote engine starter, idle stop-start, and a head-up warning display may also be available. However, a Multi-View Angle Rear Camera with Dynamic Guidelines is standard on all models.

The 2016 MDX will now feature the AcuraWatch suite of advanced safety and driver assist features, available on all models and standard when equipped with the Advance Package. This new feature will include Road Departure Mitigation and Rear Cross Traffic Monitor, with the hopes of earning top marks in government crash tests.

Despite the new nine-speed, the base MDX is EPA-estimated at 19/27 mpg city/highway, or 1 mpg less in the city and on the highway compared to the 2015 Acura MDX. With the available stop-start system, fuel economy is rated at 20/27 mpg. SH-AWD models are rated at 18/26 mpg or 19/26 mpg with stop-start, versus 18/27 mpg for last year's model.

The 2016 MDX tops out at $58,000 for an SH-AWD model with Advance, AcuraWatch Plus and Entertainment packages. SH-AWD by itself costs $2000, while the AcuraWatch Plus package runs $1500 and the Technology package costs $4425.

Acura is launching the 2016 MDX this week at dealers nationwide.
