It's raining Audi A3s. Not long after we got the 2015 A3 sedan and Cabrio, the German automaker has announced at the 2014 New York International Auto Show that we'll also be getting the 2016 A3 TDI Sportback next summer.

"The A3 TDI Sportback has an incredibly passionate and loyal fan base, this new version has been one of our most requested models since the announcement of the new A3 family," said Scott Keogh, President of Audi of America, in a release. Standing on the automaker's booth, we can see why people are so excited over it. The Sportback TDI looks much sportier that the conservative A3 sedan with "coupe-like looks with the utility of a crossover." While we already had good things to say about the Audi A3 sedan during our first drive, we can expect the A3 Sportback TDI to yield the same results, if not better considering it'll be more fuel efficient. Although the German automaker hasn't yet revealed those figures yet, we can expect it to best the A3 sedan's 23/33/27 mpg city/highway/combined. The current diesel-powered A3 hatch is rated at 30/42/34 mpg, so we anticipate similar, if not better.. Those numbers are all thanks to the 2016 A3 TDI Sportback's 150-hp 2.0-liter turbodiesel I-4 paired with a six-speed dual-clutch automatic.

The Sportback may also provide that extra space some buyers are looking for in the A3. "The second row is a squeeze, but there's no banging heads on the roof getting in," we said of the A3 sedan, which has been tagged at 35.1 inches of rear leg space. Count on the the Sportback to boast all the premium features offered in the sedan, including the available MMI infotainment system, Audi drive select, and a Bang and Olufsen audio system. If the 2016 A3 Sportback TDI still isn't your thing, keep in mind we’re also getting the A3 e-tron plug-in hybrid with a 148-hp 1.4-liter I-4 that works with a 75kw electric motor for a combined output of just over 200 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The Audi S3 will also be coming soon, but until then, the A3 TDI Sportback will be the next hottest A3 on the market when arrives in the summer of 2015.
