The 2016 Bentley Continental GT3-R is unlike any Bentley road car in the company's history. Inspired by the Bentley Continental GT3 race car, the road-going version features an extremely boisterous exhaust. On this episode of "Ignition," Jason Cammisa tests the sportiest Bentley ever.

Research

Unlike the rear-drive Bentley Continental GT3 race car, the Continental GT3-R is still based on an older Audi all-wheel-drive chassis that hangs the engine entirely in front of the front axle. In order to reduce front end weight, Bentley replaced the Continental GT Speed's twin-turbo 6.0-liter W-12 with an Audi-sourced twin-turbo 4.0-liter V-8. The engine is rated 572 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque, but an overboost function boosts power to 592 hp for 15 seconds. The Continental GT3-R hit 60 mph in 3.3 seconds.

The all-wheel drive system normally sends 60 percent of power to the rear wheels, but can send up to 85 percent during performance driving. A brake-based torque vectoring system brakes the inside rear wheel to help rotate the car through the corners.

Inside, the 2016 Bentley Continental GT3-R features carbon fiber trim in place of the automaker's standard wood veneer and a rear seat delete.
After driving it on the street, Cammisa takes it to Willow Springs to see how it handles on the track. And of course, professional race car driver and Motor Trend hot shoe Randy Pobst comes along for an official lap. Oh, and the Continental GT3-R coupe's exhaust even gets them in trouble at the track.
