The 2016 BMW X1 will start at $35,795 when it goes on sale this October. That's an increase of $3,945 from the outgoing model.

It's important to note that the price increase reflects the discontinuation of rear-wheel drive for the X1 lineup. In fact, the only trim available for 2016 is the X1 xDrive28i, which features a 2.0-liter turbo-four with 228 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque mated to an all-wheel drive system. BMW estimates a 0-60 time of 6.3 seconds, similar to the 6.4 seconds we tested on a 2013 xDrive28i that packed 240 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. The 2015 X1 xDrive28i was priced at $33,650.

Standard features on all X1 models include 18-inch wheels, power front seats, and a seven-speaker sound system. Options include heated front seats ($550) and a driver assistance package with parking assistant, park distance control, and rearview camera ($1,150). A $2,550 Technology package adds navigation, head-up display, and enhanced USB and Bluetooth with smartphone integration. A panoramic moonroof, satellite radio, power-folding mirrors, lumbar support, and LED headlights with cornering lights are available in a $3,250 Premium package. Genuine leather seats are also extra. The X1 will offer a diverse color palette for 2016. Available colors include shades of white, gray, bronze, brown, olive, blue, and black. Inside, neutral colors -- black, beige, and brown -- fill the cabin.
