Vehicle Summary

The 2016 Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD slots above the Silverado 1500 and below the larger Silverado 3500HD and is available in rear- or four-wheel-drive configurations, two box lengths, and three cab styles.

Overview

Two engines are offered in the 2016 Silverado 2500HD, a gas 6.0-liter V-8 rated at 360 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque or a 6.6-liter turbodiesel V-8 with 397 hp and 765 lb-ft. Both engines are paired to a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard and available features include Chevrolet's MyLink infotainment system with either a 7.0- or 8.0-inch touchscreen, navigation, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, alloy wheels up to 20 inches in diameter, front and rear park assist, a Bose premium audio system, a rear-seat entertainment system, a small screen in between gauges, and a rearview camera. When properly equipped, the Silverado 2500HD can tow up to 18,000 pounds with a fifth wheel.

Safety

The NHTSA and IIHS haven't crash tested the 2016 Silverado 2500HD. Higher trim levels are available with the active safety features such as forward collision warning and lane departure warning.

What We Think

In a 2015 First Test, we said that the Silverado 2500HD's interior is a big step up with top-notch material quality, comfortable seating, and better sound deadening. The truck's MyLink infotainment system is also easy to use and well laid out. Ride quality has also improved with minimal porpoising and bucking; however, it's not as smooth as the Silverado 1500. The diesel engine also offers plenty of power to move the heavy truck with ease.

Cool Fact

The Chevrolet Silverado 2500HD is closely related to the GMC Sierra 2500HD.
