Fiat’s dorky 500L hatchback has yet to catch the attention of U.S. buyers, so the company is giving it another shot with this 2016 Fiat 500X that will attempt to ride the crossover wave with its more SUV-like styling.

Research

The 500X shares its platform with the Jeep Renegade and will offer a range of four gasoline engines and three diesels in Europe. While the company has not yet announced which of these powertrains are coming to the U.S., we expect the U.S.-spec 500X to offer the 170-hp, 1.4-liter turbocharged “MultiAir” four-cylinder and the 184-hp, 2.4-liter “Tigershark” four-cylinder shared with the Renegade. All-wheel drive will be an option, and brings with it a nine-speed automatic transmission, while a six-speed manual may also be offered on front-wheel-drive models.

This gives it a significantly more streamlined look without abandoning the retro Fiat 500 design cues like round headlights and squared-off taillights with a chrome surround. Fiat is surely hoping that this more crossover-like look will resonate better with buyers.

Though Fiat has not yet released photos of the interior, we expect it to look much like that of the Renegade and 500L with its UConnect touchscreen and spacious rear seat and cargo area.

Stay tuned for more details about the 2016 Fiat 500X as the company releases more information about the U.S. version. As the car goes on sale in Europe in the second quarter of next year, expect it to come to our shores sometime a bit later in 2015.
