2016 Ford F-150 Will Be Available With CNG Prep Pack

The 2016 Ford F-150 will offer a prep package that enables it to run on compressed natural gas or propane. The factory-installed option will be available for order on models equipped with 5.0-liter V-8 engines starting this summer.

For $315, buyers can select the CNG/propane prep package, which includes strengthened intake and exhaust valves and valve seats. Then, customers will head to one of the Ford-approved modifiers that will supply fuel tanks, fuel lines, and fuel injectors. These upfits can run between $7,500 and $9,500 depending on fuel tank capacity, Ford says.

According to the automaker, the F-150 is the only light-duty Mercedes Confirms Nissan Partnership for Upcoming Truck">pickup capable of running on CNG or propane. Other automakers, including Ram and General Motors, offer CNG capability on their heavy-duty trucks. Ford also offers CNG capability on its Super Duty trucks, as well as on other vehicles including the Transit, Transit Connect, and E-Series.

2016 Ford F 150 with CNG Prep© Provided by MotorTrend 2016 Ford F 150 with CNG Prep Gas prices may be on the rise for now, but on average, CNG is still less expensive than gas. CNG sells for an average of $2.11 per gallon, compared to $2.58 for unleaded regular fuel per Ford data.

Previously, the automaker had introduced a prep kit for the 2014 F-150, which sold more than 2,000 units in less than a year. Sales of prep kits on the 2016 model are expected to exceed this amount.
