2016 Infiniti QX50 First Look

The Infiniti QX50 luxury crossover hasn't been significantly changed since the automaker revised its nomenclature back in 2014. Other models in the Infiniti lineup, however, have been redesigned or significantly refreshed, including the 2015 Q70, which debuted last year in New York. We would have expected the automaker to redesign the QX50 for the new model year, but it looks like Infiniti will finally be giving it a significant refresh in preparation for other new models entering Infiniti's luxury crossover lineup.

Now it's time for the 2016 QX50 to take another step away from the EX35.

Infiniti has taken great lengths to make sure the 2016 QX50 is far enough in size from the QX30 concept, which may soon be bound for production. The new QX50 has a wheelbase 3.2 inches longer, and the automaker has also reworked the exterior to be more in tune with other models in the lineup. A new exterior color, a revised trim line, and an updated interior are also new for the 2016 model year.

Infiniti has also added a new front bumper and lower front fascia, new LED DRLs, an Infiniti-style double-arch front grille, new side mirrors with integrated LED turn signals, and updated side sill styling. A new rear bumper and lower rear fascia with thin LED taillights and chrome-finished dual exhaust tips completes the rear look. Infiniti L-shaped headlights and foglights have also been added, along with optional xenon headlights with the adaptive front lighting system. Aluminum roof rails are available, and a power sliding tinted glass moonroof with a sliding sunshade and one-touch open/close is standard. Customers can choose from seven exterior color options, including the newest Hagane Blue.

Textured aluminum accents surround the cabin, and maple interior accents are available. The leather-wrapped steering wheel features audio and cruise controls, and a 7-inch color display rests in the center stack. Standard features include a rearview monitor, keyless entry and ignition, SiriusXM satellite radio, and Bluetooth. Available features include the Around View Monitor with front-, side-, and rear-mounted cameras to help with parking and reduce blind spots; a Bose premium audio system with 11 speakers and two subwoofers; Infiniti hard drive navigation system with an in-dash DVD audio/video drive; streaming audio; NavTraffic; NavWeather; voice recognition for audio and navigation; and an advanced climate control system with Plasmacluster air purifier.

The standard seven-speed automatic transmission will feature manual shift mode, DS mode, Downshift Rev Matching, and Adaptive Shift Control. Customers will be able to choose from rear-wheel drive or Infiniti's Intelligent All-Wheel Drive system. Infiniti has shortened the QX50's lineup to just the base and AWD models, but four available packages will be available: Premium, Premium Plus, Deluxe Touring, and Technology.

The refreshed 2016 Infiniti QX50 has added room for a smaller model in the form of the QX30 to join the lineup, but will the small crossover eat into the aging QX50's sales? Stay tuned for more information on the new QX50, along with the QX30 and Q70. 2016 Infiniti QX50© Provided by MotorTrend 2016 Infiniti QX50
