For 2016, Lexus is swapping out its 2.5-liter V-6 for a 2.0-liter turbo-four as the base engine in the IS sedan. According to EPA numbers, this change nets a 26-mpg combined rating, which makes the IS a bit more competitive in its segment.

The 2016 Lexus IS 200t achieves 22/33/26 mpg city/highway/combined, up from 21/30/24 mpg on the previous IS 250. That's not an enormous change, but its enough to keep up with the rest of the class.

Unfortunately, the new numbers aren't quite high enough to best the fierce competition. The BMW 320i and Mercedes-Benz C300 hit 28 mpg combined, while the Audi A4 maxes out at 27 mpg combined. Each of these models has a 2.0-liter turbo-four, and the numbers assume the engine is paired with an automatic transmission.

The IS 200t packs the same engine that is under the hood of the compact NX crossover, although it has been tweaked to produce 241 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque in the sedan. Also look for an all-wheel-drive IS 300 with a 3.5-liter V-6 engine, estimated by the EPA to receive 19/26/21 mpg. The slightly heartier 306-pony Lexus IS 350 tops out at 19/28/22 mpg when paired with rear-wheel drive, or 19/26/21 mpg with all-wheel drive.
