Lexus is ready to launch the fourth generation of its successful RX luxury crossover, 17 years after the first version burst into showrooms. This teaser photo provides our first look at the 2016 Lexus RX, which makes its debut at the upcoming 2015 New York auto show.

The teaser photo shows that the 2016 Lexus RX will have a relatively low roofline and several sharp creases along its bodysides. The wide C-pillar has a large black trim piece to give the crossover a floating-roof effect, and black plastic cladding around the wheel wells helps emphasize the model's tough, crossover stance.

Previous spy photos revealed that the 2016 Lexus RX will likely have a smoother, more rounded nose, with Lexus' common spindle grille treatment between its narrow, pointy headlights. Despite rumors that the new Lexus RX may gain a third row of seats, the relatively sloping roofline implies there wouldn't be enough room for seating seven in the new model.

Beneath the new metal, reports suggest the 2016 Lexus RX will shave some weight to help boost fuel efficiency. Expect powertrain choices to comprise update versions of the current car's 3.5-liter V-6 engine and its gas-electric hybrid system. While front-wheel-drive will remain standard, all-wheel-drive will be optional. Finally, all versions should adopt the 8-speed automatic transmission used in today's RX 350 F-Sport model

With 107,490 units sold in the U.S. in 2014 and 13,059 sold through February of this year, the current RX is by far Lexus' most popular model. Look for more photos and information on the new version when the 2016 Lexus RX is revealed on Wednesday, April 1.
